An Interview
with Mohammed Shahedual Quadar LIST Alumni from Bangladesh
Interview
with Mohamed Quadar, a London Institute of
Shipping and Transport Alumni, now pursuing
further studies under a “Commonwealth
Scholarship” in London on the strength of his
academic achievements at LIST.
Mohammed Quadar 31 years old from Chittagong,
Bangladesh who has recently completed the following
courses at LIST:-
• Post-graduate Diploma in Maritime
Management (Distinction)
• Diploma in Shipping Management
What is your previous work experience?
Prior to
joining LIST, I worked for 3 ½ years for QC
Containers Line a ship owning company in Chittagong,
Bangladesh. Prior to that I have worked for another
shipping company. My employers had given me leave
to study in London
Why did you come to London to study at LIST?
The course at LIST is very well established and
that it is a career building course, that is
suitable for someone wanting to make a career in
the many aspects of shipping management. For
example, ship brokering and covers the many
different aspects of ship management, building,
shipping finance, shipping economics and maritime
law.
The risks in the shipping industry are high and
that good management can be effective and prevent
loss of investment.
Is the course suitable for someone from Asia?
The course is very suitable for both Europeans and
Asian students and that the interaction between the
very varied student body from some of the worlds
major shipping nations is a very valuable
experience. For Example, Greece, Norway, Turkey
India, Ghana, Lebanon, Syria, Brazil Sri Lanka,
Bahrain and Korea, Italy and Germany to name but a
few.
What has surprised me is the very high percentage
of students from Greece on the course and that this
must be very indicative of the high standard. I was
the only Bangladeshi student.
How valuable do you think it is to study
Shipping Management?
Strong management is required for the shipping
industry.
Moreover, professional shipping management can go a
long way towards initiating economic growth of the
shipping industry within a country.
Why London and not the US or Australia?
Firstly, London has world wide recognition, as the
centre of the shipping industry that all the major
shipping organisations are in London for example
International Maritime Organisation (IMO) the
Baltic Exchange, Lloyds and BIMCOM.
Secondly, that I wanted to obtain a quality degree
in shipping management.
Why not study in Bangladesh?
Whilst
there is a marine academy for nautical engineers
and ships masters, there is no opportunity to study
management in relation to the shipping business.
Do you think that you can contribute to your
country's economy?
Bangladesh
has a lots of resources and goods shipping
management is one of the key to the future. Without
management a country is like a ship without a
captain.
A captain can control his ship in abnormal
situations and accordingly a good leader with
management skills qualities, is able to control his
companies resources for maximum output.
What do you plan to do, when you have finished
the course?
My aims was to get a good position in the shipping
industry, and to be involved in the development of
the shipping industry in Bangladesh from the
viewpoint of management discipline, technology,
operations, marketing and to establish good
communication.
If theory and practice works together, both
companies and countries can get maximise output.
However, on the strength of the distinction that
I was awarded for the courses I studied at LIST, I
have been able to obtain a Commonwealth Scholarship
to study another course prior to returning to
Bangladesh.
