London Institute of Shipping & Transport

Shipping today is in a period of continuous change. It is driven by investment in new tonnage, development in E-commerce, rising professional standards at all levels of management, more focus on trade and shipping, by governments changing legal environment - such as ISM code, more emphasis in marketing, ship finance and logistics, privatisation of sea ports and more focus in Maritime economics. This demands a new breed of management and highly sophisticated skills which have a strategic focus. Above all the managers today must be adequately equipped to handle such a situation and develop viable strategies. Also Shipping, in both its physical and commercial aspects, is making stronger demands on those persons employed in the industry. Specialists are still required but they are also expected to understand other aspects of business as well as the advantages and disadvantages of competitor services.
