- Shipping Ports and Environment Pathway - Shipping and port operations are an important industrial sector for all coastal nations. This course address industry demands for environmentally aware maritime professionals.You'll focus on the environmental management of marine industries, and explore issues concerned with the sustainable management of the world's oceans, seaways, ports and harbours. Through exercises in role play and comprehensive case studies, you'll gain the practical skills as well as the theoretical knowledge sought by employers. This will further boost your position within the global shipping industry.
- Duration: Full time 1 year and Part time 2 years
- Entry requirements: Honours degree (or equivalent) in any one of the following: Maritime-related Studies; Environmental Science; Engineering; Management; Transport; Economics; Geography; Business or Law. Please note that this list is not exclusive. Alternatively, a Higher National Diploma (Merit or Distinction award) or ordinary degree in a maritime-related subject combined with an appropriate track record of achievement in a professional context such as at a senior managerial level may be sufficient. In the case of professional mariners, the entry requirements are as follows:
- Deck Officer: Master's (Unlimited) Certificate + at least two years' experience as Chief Officer.
- Ship Engineer: Chief Engineer (Class 1) Certificate + at least two years' as Chief Engineer.
- Fees: Full time - for students ordinarily residing in the UK and European Union £2,975 and for international students £8,895. For part-time students ordinarily residing in UK or a member state of the European Union, the fees are: Year 1, £1490 and year 2, £1490.
- Scholarship: £ 1,000 scholarship available to a limited number of full time international students from Bangladesh, Caribbean, Ghana, India, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania and Thailand

You'll take advantage of industry-standard facilities in the City Centre and, only a few miles away at the entrance of the River Hamble, Warsash Maritime Centre.
Special facilities - With the advantage of Southampton's superb geographic location, you'd have access to a wide range of study environments. The nearby Warsash Maritime Academy can be used for practical field and boat work. A recent addition is the 'Solent Surveyor', a new 10 metre catamaran Evolution 995, equipped to carry out inshore navigational training, hydrographic and environmental research. On campus there are more practical testing facilities including a purpose-designed and equipped CAD design office, hosting virtually all of the currently available software used in the industry, plus maritime systems laboratories. These accommodate state-of-the-art computer systems for the management of coastal resources and treatment of coastal data. Southampton Solent University also benefits from a 60-metre industry standard towing tank used for laboratory sessions and final year project work, as well as a 4-metre stability tank. We have built new fabrication shops for advanced composite construction, which will provide you with access to hi-tech materials and processes commonly used in the marine industry.
Professional accreditation - This course is validated by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and is supported by an Industry Liaison Panel drawn from businesses in Southampton and London.
Field trips - Southampton is a major centre within the UK and European shipping sector and this course takes advantage of such a position with visits to the Port of Southampton and other local organisations. The international environmental designations adjacent to Southampton also provide an excellent context to study the interaction between shipping and the environment.
Career Opportunities The course aim to produce graduates who are both technically competent and capable of management at project level and above. It is expected that those who have completed the course may look towards roles such as project managers within relevant maritime organisations and business, research and development professionals, managers involved in the development of policies and, managers involved in the implementation of policies.
